What's Really in Your Hair Oil?

When it comes to hair care, most people assume that any oil will nourish their scalp and

strengthen their hair. However, not all hair oils are created equal. Similarly, many people resort to making their own hair oils at home, believing that adding herbs to oil will create an effective product. Unfortunately, the base used for such oils is generally the commercial cheaply available coconut oil is blue bottle. What they don't know is that this innocent looking, widely available coconut oil is adulterated with a petroleum byproduct called liquid paraffin (LP), an excellent adulterant that offers no real nourishment and instead creates a temporary shine while silently damaging hair.

Let’s explore how Liquid Paraffin in commercial and homemade oils pose a danger to your scalp and hair health-

Liquid paraffin (LP) is commonly found in many commercial hair oils because it gives the

illusion of smooth, silky hair. However, this is purely superficial. LP is a mineral oil derivative, and rather than penetrating the scalp and nourishing hair roots, it simply coats the hair shaft leaving the hair root dry.

If you read the contents on the back of your hair oil bottle, alongwith 'Liquid Paraffin/Mineral oil', you will also find silicone derivatives like 'Dimethicone, Cyclopentasiloxane' mentioned that work similarly like LP.

Over time, they cause several problems:

Creates a Barrier – LP forms a thick, occlusive layer on the scalp, preventing nutrients,

moisture, and oxygen from reaching the hair follicles. This leads to dryness, itchiness, and

scalp irritation.

Weakens Hair Over Time – Because LP prevents proper absorption of nourishing

ingredients, hair becomes brittle, dry, and prone to breakage. This why you may experience a severe hairfall even after trying different hair oils.

Causes Buildup and Clogs Follicles – LP does not wash out easily, leading to product

buildup. This blocks hair follicles, which can cause dandruff, scalp infections, and increased hair fall. This results in the need to use strong synthetic shampoos.

Artificial Shine Without Nourishment – LP makes hair look glossy, but this effect is

temporary and misleading. Without real nourishment, hair becomes weak from within, leading to long-term damage.

What's More in Your Hair Oil?

Though the added synthetic fragnances give oil the appealing smell, they often contain phthalates and allergens. Prolong use is associated with sensitive scalps and hormonal disruption.

Artificial colorants used in hair oil can trigger allergies and scalp irritation, especially in sensitive individuals.

Preservatives like parabens are added to extend shelf life but these are also linked to hormonal disruption.

Why Homemade Oils Are Ineffective?

Many people believe that boiling herbs in coconut or other oils at home can create an effective hair treatment. While homemade oils may seem natural, they lack the precise formulation needed to extract herbal nutrients fully. Here’s why they don’t work:

Incorrect Extraction of Herbal Properties – Simply boiling herbs in oil does not ensure

proper absorption of their medicinal components. Some herbal compounds are water-soluble, while others are fat-soluble. Without the correct extraction process, many of these beneficial components never reach the oil, making the final product weak and ineffective.

Unstable Formulation – Homemade oils are not standardized, meaning the concentration of active ingredients varies. This inconsistency reduces the oil’s overall effectiveness.

Use of Commercial Coconut Oil – Many people use readily available commercial coconut oil as a base, which may already contain preservatives and liquid paraffin. This completely negates any benefits that added herbs might have provided.

Short Shelf Life and Poor Absorption – Without proper preservation techniques, homemade oils tend to spoil quickly. Additionally, they often lack the ability to penetrate the scalp deeply, reducing their ability to nourish hair from within.
